Justseeds
/ Visual Resistance Artists’
Cooperative
Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized
community of artists who have banded together to advocate for social
movements through their art. Their website, which serves as an information
center on current events in radical art and culture, offers Justseeds
artists’ prints for sale at very modest prices. Their blog covers
political printmaking, socially engaged street art and culture related
to social movements. Justseeds believes in the power of personal expression
in concert with collective action to transform society.
History
Justseeds was conceived in 1998 by artist Josh MacPhee as a way to
promote and distribute his art and the Celebrate People’s History
poster series. Due to the fast-growing success of the Justseeds online
community and poster venture, MacPhee found himself turning to a generous
grassroots community effort to help him save what he had created.
He was joined by a dozen like-minded artists and previous collaborators
as well as the political street art blog Visual Resistance to re-create
Justseeds as a cooperative effort. Justseeds was transformed into
Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative, an artist/worker
owned and run cooperative, that launched in the summer of 2007. You
can support their creative efforts by buying one of their print works
or posters, many priced at just $4.00 each.
