Local 8, Marc
Nelson / Peter cCole
In 1913 thousands of Philadelphia longshoresmen
formed Industrial Workers of the World Local 8, the nation’s
most progressive union. Local 8 welcomed African Americans, Irish
Americans, Poles, Lithuanians, West Indians and others, a first
for the time. The two-color
offset printed poster, 11" x 17" (unsigned, unlimited
edition)
is available
from the website of Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative,
a decentralized community of artists who believe in the power of
personal expression in concert with collective action to transform
society.

| A
Question for Citizens.
Written
by Stuart Ewen
to The New York Times,
September 28, 2007.
To the Editor:
Reading of the new civics test to be given to immigrants wishing
to become naturalized American citizens [“Tough Questions
for a New Test,” September 28] I puzzled over the one of the
new questions that will appear:
Q: “What stops one branch of government from becoming too
powerful?”
It gives me heart to think that recent immigrants to the United
States may be finally able to answer that question. Since 9-11,
our existing pool of citizens has been woefully unable to.
