Irma Bohórquez-Geisler was born in Mexico. She began her work in photography in 1998 and has exhibited her work in many New York City venues, including the Alice Austin House Museum, Staten Island Institute of Arts & Science Museum (where her photographs are in the permanent collection), Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, A.I.R. Gallery, Soho20 Chelsea, Cork Gallery, the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery and the Professional Women Photographers. She has also exhibited in Mexico City. Irma received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Mexico City (UNAM) and a Ph. D. in Ecological Entomology, from the University of Oxford. Irma moved to New York City in 1991. Currently she resides in Staten Island since 1992.

The Mexican Immigrant Community
Irma has been awarded multiple grants from the Council on the Arts and Humanities of Staten Island, most recently in 2006 and 2007. She has been photographing the Mexican Immigrant Community for some time, showing how they have brought their traditions and established themselves in New York.
